Barcode Scanners

Most shops will make use of barcodes on their products and as a result barcode scanners are a very common sight in most shops today. Barcode scanners can read printed barcodes with are printed onto the packaging on products to be sold in shops. These barcodes will carry information such as the price and what the product is the barcode scanners will interpret this information, and allows the user to simple pass items over the bar code scanner rather than manual type in the price of a product.

Barcode scanners were initially used to automate the checkouts in supermarkets, and they are still widely used for this purpose today. However, barcode scanners also have other applications. For example, barcode scanners may be used in warehouses and stock rooms to keep track of how much stock there is, as computers can make used of the information that is read by the barcode scanners.

Hand held pricing units used for reducing the price of stock in supermarkets will also make use of barcode
scanners. The user will pass the product which is to be reduced over the barcode scanner built into the unit, which will then print out an appropriate label with the products’ reduced price for stock clearance.
Some super markets now implement schemes are customers can use barcode scanners to scan their purchases themselves. Some shops have fixed barcode scanners in self service units, where customers can scan and then pay for their products without need for an assistant.
